Equality & Diversity

Equality and diversity is at the heart of our academy vision.

We value and actively promote inclusion and we celebrate diversity. Everyone feels welcomed, supported and confident about being themselves whatever their characteristics or background.

What do our students say?

  • ‘You can be whoever you want to be at Belle Vue Girls’
  • ‘You have always got someone to lean on. You are never alone at Belle Vue Girls’
  • ‘The teachers made me feel safe when I came to Belle Vue. Everyone is always smiling at me’
  • ‘We learn how to be confident learners and confident speakers. We learn how to have independence’

We are committed to breaking down barriers to learning, and tackling all forms of disadvantage; we believe in the power of education to promote social equality and dramatically improve life chances. Our mission is to provide a truly exceptional educational experience for all.

The academy recognises and welcomes its duty under the Equality Act 2010 to take into account the need to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between different parts of our academy community. We actively challenge discrimination on the grounds of the protected characteristics (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation). The academy makes adjustments to alleviate disadvantage, by taking positive action to deal with particular disadvantages affecting a group because of a protected characteristic.

Everyone is highly valued at Belle Vue Girls’ Academy. The academy is committed to creating a community that recognises and celebrates difference and diversity. We work to create an inclusive environment, in which everyone feels welcomed, supported and confident about being themselves whatever their characteristics or background.

Belle Vue Girls' Academy holds a Bronze Diversity Award for demonstrating how we have established a strong commitment to Inclusion, Equality and Diversity. The report states 'The school places Diversity, Equality and Inclusion at the centre of their vision and value statements. They talk about breaking barriers to tackle down disadvantage and actively promote inclusion. The academy, through a variety of evidence, was able to demonstrate a commitment to building an ethos of inclusion and equality of educational outcomes for all students'.

Equality Objectives are reviewed annually, and Protected Characteristics coverage across the curriculum is mapped and evaluated, by the Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for Personal Development. Wider Personal Development, such as the assembly programme (ie. Black History Month, Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month, LGBTQ+ History Month and International Women's Day) and student leadership (ie. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors) support the delivery of relevant themes.

Student leaders contribute to Bradford Citizen's anti-racism campaign through the Root Out Racism project alongside other BDAT schools and schools from other Bradford trusts. Student Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors plan and deliver assemblies promoting inclusivity and respect for others. Culture Days, introduced as a result of student voice, give all students additional opportunities to celebrate their culture and identity.
